Our Streets Now: Sports 2024

In April 2024, we launched our national Sports campaign, combatting sexual harassment and limiting gender stereotypes within the world of sports and exercise.

An Our Streets Now survey found that over 70% of people had experienced sexual harassment whilst exercising or playing sports and 4 in 5 people make adjustments to their behaviours whilst exercising because of harassment or intimidation.

As part of our campaign, we created CPD accredited training for sports staff and volunteers, looking specifically at the issues of PSH within a sporting context, ideas of masculinity and how to handle disclosures and incidents of PSH when they occur.

In May, we announced Charlotte Henshaw MBE as our first Sports Ambassador

What do young people say?

We worked with four young female weightlifters at Llanelli Weightlifting Academy:

Adults and volunteers working within sports…

“The staff couldn’t stop talking in the office about what they had learnt and what our next steps might be. I’ve received a number of comments about it being the best staff conference day we’ve had.” - Feedback from a staff training day at Cardiff Metropolitan University Sport Department

“I’ve had conversations with our young athletes since your visit that I know wouldn’t have happened without the work you did.”- Head Coach, grassroots weightlifting academy
